Ukoni is Igbo for kitchen. Not a fancy name - it's what we are. A place where the food comes first and the owner is in the kitchen every day making sure it's right. From the vegetables we grow to the way we plate each serving, nothing leaves this kitchen unless we'd serve it to our own family.

Wood tones, a terracotta wall, light through wide windows, plants in every corner. We built this dining room to feel like an extension of the home kitchen - somewhere you can actually talk, eat slowly, and not feel rushed. The tables are spaced so you're not sitting in anyone's business. The surfaces are things that look better with use.

My father keeps a garden behind the house. That's where the ugu, the uziza, the scent leaf come from - picked same day they're cooked. The tomatoes, the peppers, the greens. This isn't a concept. It's a garden. The distance from soil to plate is a few hundred metres.
